about

Detroit Sludge Pioneer with his First debut album - Leave Earth-

Detroit’s Joel Dunn’s new full-length further explores his self-termed ‘Sludge’ sound, a low-slung and raw form of house and acid fueled by 303s and 909s.

Having been in the making for nearly two years, ‘Leave Earth’ is composed of 12 tracks (including 7 previously unreleased tracks), with the product as a whole having become a very industrial and dark collection of unpolished house, proto-techno and acid rigged with crackling sound, sci-fi themes and hi-tec h vibes. Opening track ‘In Need Of Control’ sets the tone for the entire album with its roaring semi-distorted synths, slow-mo groove and mental atmosphere, after which tracks such as ‘Dimension 8’ and ‘Majestic 12’ and ‘Dimension 6’ cover acid and electro respectively.

Most of the tracks seem to be built from nothing more than just acid wobbles, basic percussion and strings but audibly unravel upon closer inspection, and the album as a whole breathes a very comic and trippy atmosphere that’s best enjoyed in the darkest of clubs. Its somewhat otherworldly vibe and original take on house music turns ‘Leave Earth’ into one of the most original albums that have appeared in the genre in recent times, and is therefore highly recommended to any house head with a taste of adventure.

if edm is drug music, Marshall Applewhite is the anti drug. Every 16 year old on molly would run from this stuff. Every person who understands underground dance music though, they will get it, they will love it.
